-Big Mike M and I met at MP about 10:30 and headed to Post Point, and he spotted a large plume and spray shooting straight up out of the water not too far off shore, maybe 1/4 distance to red can. So of course we had to check it out , in rather large wind waves, and some tide. Sure enough it was a gray whale, just sitting there treading water, maybe hung up in some fishing gear.  So we go by it and head down wind in some really nice waves. Then head back up for another round. Now, the gusts are 38, with a steady 28, so you know , it's windy, with some big waves, [well for Bellingham Bay anyway, 6-7 foot at PP, steep]+Big Mike M and I met at MP about 10:30 and headed to Post Point, and he spotted a large plume and spray shooting straight up out of the water not too far off shore, maybe 1/4 distance to red can. -Michael boy, being full of that young male stuff, testosterone, aggressively heads out beam sea looking for **Moby Dick**,when he enters a series of almost vertical breaking waves, saves it on the first one and then gets tossed out on the second, next to the whale. I thought he was going to grab the whale by the snout and check for fishing gear, and perhaps he did, but  by then I had to pay attention to what I was doing and couldn't turn my head or I'd be in the water also. Made a right turn towards shore so I could see if Ahab [Gregory Peck] and Moby Dick were coming by tied together, but alas he was finally getting back in his boat, and he looked OK. Don't know about the whale, we went home. factually accurate, D+Michael boy, being full of that young male stuff, testosterone, aggressively heads out beam sea looking for **Moby Dick**,when he enters a series of almost vertical breaking waves, saves it on the first one and then gets tossed out on the second, next to the whale.  On occasion, some people have questioned the voracity of some of the tales I tell. That is why I am always happy have witnesses to life’s little adventures. Far be it from me to question the accuracy of narrators that were actually on site when things like this befall me. I will say, a 3 mm wetsuit seemed just right out there after a while in the drink with leviathans about and a fat boat was just right for climbing back into in the midst of a squall afterwards.\\ On occasion, some people have questioned the voracity of some of the tales I tell.  I stood on the shore ready to launch my ski. Michael Medler began his tale of the whale. I interrupted, and when I called him Mike, he said, “No, call me Queequeg!” I noticed tattoos were forming around his eyes and soon his face was covered in ink. I stood on the shore ready to launch my ski.  The big man described the wind howling and angry waves thrashing his boat, but he was undeterred - Q had a mission. He could see the whale diving and surfacing with Captain Duncan strapped to the side of the leviathan in a mess of lines. Q’s powerful strokes brought him broadside to the whale when a wave that has been depicted in many Japanese ink prints threw him from his craft. Underwater he could hear Duncan’s screams alternating between curses and laughter. Queeequeg swam to the whale and climbed on the beast. He freed the captain and landed in his bucket like a cowboy at a rodeo. With Duncan thrown over his ski like a wounded man over a horse, Q hauled the captain to shore John Wayne style. I think Michael said, women and children were shrieking with joy when they reached the shore, but I might be embellishing here. The big man described the wind howling and angry waves thrashing his boat, but he was undeterred - Q had a mission. -I launched my ski, and inspired by Michael’s story, I began swapping tales with David S as we headed South. Seals popped their heads into the air to hear about broken bones in Turkey, high-speed crashes on the Mass Turnpike, and other misadventures. I switched the topic to the Seaside Hotel, a series on Amazon Prime about wealthy Danes during  WWII. As David was gushing forward with spoilers, I noticed a soulless grey bow inch into my peripheral vision. I thought it was a Flex, but when I looked closely at its markings I saw the Mercedes logo. Dressed in a vintage German lieutenant’s uniform, paddling  ramrod straight, the soldier barked: “I am Herr Grossman and if you are paddling here, there will be pain!”+I launched my ski, and inspired by Michael’s story, I began swapping tales with David S as we headed South.  David S, in a French accent, declared, “ve must go underground.” He pried open the top of a stump floating on the bay that looked at home as if it was rooted in the Black Forest. We shoved our skis through the opening and emerged near the shore. We snuck along the coast, catching a back eddy that helped us elude the lieutenant and his Nazi followers. David S, in a French accent, declared, “ve must go underground.” He pried open the top of a stump floating on the bay that looked at home as if it was rooted in the Black Forest. -No sooner had our stories begun anew, when we heard a grunt. We turned and said hello to Rievers. He grunted back, “Not Rievers, Hogan, and pick up the pace or be lost!”  Damn, it was on. We fell in line and added pressure to our blades. I felt like I had a rope over my shoulder and I was pulling my kids in their sleds up a steep hill.+No sooner had our stories begun anew, when we heard a grunt. We turned and said hello to Rievers. -David dug into his Barnacle playbook, calmed his voice, and began asking me questions as if we were enjoying beers at Stone’s Throw. When his first ruse didn’t work he transformed his voice into a siren’s call. “We will slow at the point, come to the rocks Dan, come to the rocks.”  How did he know that I find the female Russian accent alluring?  Luckily I was lashed to my boat with six feet of Dyneeema cord, and I used all my strength to keep my right foot from steering me into the fate of that temptress.+David dug into his Barnacle playbook, calmed his voice, and began asking me questions as if we were enjoying beers at Stone’s Throw. -Now I could see the dragon’s tooth, marked so many years ago by that young knight, Sir Larry of County Bussinger. An old timer, coincidentally with the same name as the knight, speaks of the bravery of the lad as he risked it all to warn mariners of the treachery that lies so close to home. As I glide past the salvia-covered incisor, a fog lifted from my vision and I hear Reivers say, “That was a hoot!”  We lift our skis to our shoulders and walk up the beach. We headed off to have coffee and tell a few tales.+Now I could see the dragon’s tooth, marked so many years ago by that young knight, Sir Larry of County Bussinger.  Dang, Dan! sounds like lots of adventure on a good, cold flat paddle. All I did was ski in the cold drizzle. Ok, so maybe not that different from you, except substitute beer in the parking lot for coffee at Avenue. Dang, Dan! sounds like lots of adventure on a good, cold flat paddle.  +What a great write up for an average Saturday paddle Dan. As Walter Conkrite, newscaster, used to say, “and that’s the way it is”
