Prevention

Back Side and Butt Rubbing

This can be a nagging problem particularly for folks who have more prominent bony protusions like a longer coccyx. Sometimes a coccyx will rub in some surfski bucket shapes despite excellent technique and requires some elevation off of the seat.

  • Technique - review Stroke Technique - do any changes help?
    • Reduce pressure into back of bucket
      • Focus more on pushing down with one foot/ pulling up with the other foot - Rotate forward moving your bottom away from back of the bucket, not pushing back into the back of the bucket
      • Move your pedals forward
  • Experiment with Padding : some say they find more help with padded shorts or even sew their own padding into their paddling shorts.
    • For the coccyx or rubbing in center of lower back - use padding that elevates to each side of the rubbing spot with a channel or depression where the rubbing spot is to reduce pressure there.

Chafing

  • James Michaels on shirts: “I find if the more baggy my shirt is the worse the chafing is. I don’t do sleeveless at all anymore . If it’s form fitting from the shoulder to the elbow I’m good”

  • Redfish Seakayak Seats their custom seats are for seakayaks, but take a look, maybe something they do will give you an idea for you seat pads. Or if you have an OC, you might be able to figure out some measurements that would work for your canoe and one of these custom seats.
