Shaun, Mike G., and I have decided to scrub the Saturday morning
paddle. There have been gusts over 60 mph within the last half hour
and it's blowing steady between 30 and 50 from the SE (towards
Portage). We had a high gust of 69 at about 4 am. I'm watching the
wind this afternoon and maybe it will die down a little. I want
scarey/fun conditions, not scarey/scarey conditions.

I posted a couple of pics of what it looked like out there today.
Heather and Brandon had a great downwind run from Marine Park to
Squalicum, and somehow made it look easy. I chose what I thought would
be a conservative approach, and put in at Boulevard Park; now I know
why people looked at me funny when I said I would paddle upwind, meet
those guys, and surf back. When I stuck my nose out in it and headed
south, I felt DREAD…maybe I should have taken it as a sign after my
boat had skidded 10 yards across the asphalt parking lot upside down
after the wind had somehow found it tucked in tightly in the lee of the
bath house, or when the Coast Guard station manager appeared from
somewhere (what the heck?) and asked me what the heck I was doing…or
the people there who looked at me weird and said I had 'issues'(yes
true). Anyway, I looped twice to Cornwall and counted it good…and
for some reason, I still had a bug up my butt and put in at dusk on
Lake Whatcom for 6 miles in the dark…it was STILL windy. Time for
the hot tub. Nice job Heather and Brandon.
