Velipoje Windsurfing

Albania has ample marine coastline and apparently some beaches with reliable wind so there are probably possibilities for downwinding with a surfski. Availability of boats is the question. See Rental (but bringing your own surfski may be the only likely solution?)

Downwind/Paddles

Downwind

  • Velipoje Beach (North Adriatic Coast): Ideal for beginners and intermediate paddlers, with a large, protected sandy bay. Reliable, constant thermal winds (up to 15-30+ knots) occur in the summer from 1 pm to 6 pm.

Flatwater

  • Albanian Riviera (South Adriatic Coast): Offers dramatic, rocky coastlines with clear waters, including spots like Porto Palermo, suitable for exploring coves, caves, and beaches.
    • Porto Palermo Bay:Known for its calm, turquoise waters, a historic castle, and a former submarine bunker.
    • Gjipe Canyon:A secluded beach hidden at the end of a dramatic canyon.
    • Dhermi to Jalë Bay:Sea caves, including the Pirat Cave, and secluded beaches like Aquarium Beach.
    • Ksamil Islands:Crystal clear waters and small, accessible islands.
  • Lake Koman (North): Offers dramatic, fjord-like scenery for flatwater kayaking.

Surf

Conditions

  • Albania Sea Water Temperatures 5° C = 41° F;10° C = 50° F; 20° C = 68° F (°F= (9/5 * °C) + 32)
  • Wind/Surf: The best time for, thermal wind activities like windsurfing is during the summer (June–August). The coast can experience strong, consistent, coastal winds in the afternoon, especially in the northern areas.
  • Sea Conditions: The water is generally warm from early March until November.

Safety

  • Always check weather conditions. The coast has significant, dramatic, steep cliffs.
