This year's Rough Water Race will feature a new award: the Grand Barnacle of the Bay. The trophy will be presented to the top finisher in the long course over 65 years of age. The winner's name will be inscribed upon the base of the trophy and their glory will be remembered for generations to come.
The top finishing Barnacle in the short course will receive a bottle of hot sauce.

I'm a fan of that hot sauce. Barnacle trophy is cool as well.

Is that PNWORCA rules 65 years old? Or actual birthday 65 years old? Asking for a friend.
David Scherrer Mar 17 #31223
Amazing Kevin…only one suggestion. Perhaps the Grand Barnacle award should be limited to 70 and older 🙂
joanandthom Mar 17 #31224
I agree with David. Deano may be a barnacle but he's not a “Grand Barnacle”.
Dean Bumstead Mar 17 #31226
Hey….I take my naps just like the rest of you barnacles.
Paul Reavley Mar 17 #31228
Another alias?
“Because of barnacles’ tendency to encrust in large numbers on boats (Duncan, et.al.?), create drag… they are often called “”crusty foulers.“”
Duncan Howat Mar 17 #31229
The age for the trophy's has to be 70 + because you lose at least 10 percent muscle mass per year past 70. In your 60's ,even up to 69 your still able to maintain that 40 year old body. That means that I have 80 percent less strength than Dean. Larry B 50 percent. Imagine someone just turning 60,as being qualified for this high honor. No one else would stand a chance. Besides they haven't gone through all the mind and body altering illnesses of the 60's. D
Dean Bumstead Mar 17 #31230
But my boat is 80% heavier.

Based on the arguments presented for both sides, the minimum age to receive the Grand Barnacle Award is now 70. Sorry Dean and Marc, you will have to wait until next year to be enshrined on the venerable trophy.

Whoa– nice art work. Can't wait to be a barnacle. Goals!!!
Dean Bumstead Mar 17 #31239
No problem. What’s a year at this age.

Duncan’s argument is interesting and compelling, but do we know if it is based on facts?
Kimberly Reeves Mar 17 #31241
What about the Salish Sirens? This isn’t strictly an all boys club.

Duncan Howat Mar 17 #31242
Kim, just like real barnacles, especially the over 70's paddling barnacles, are functionally sequential hermaphrodites , can be male or female at any given time, and thats the whole truth.
Paul Reavley Mar 17 #31243
What Duncan said…,
And after 70, I am inclined to think that the male androgenic boost has already dwindled more than 10%/year. But maybe there should be a separate category for anyone taking supplemental testosterone.
Kimberly Reeves Mar 18 #31248
I appreciate the dude response, but the Sirens get to factor in menopause and unrelenting hot flashes. I think that gives us a ten year pad for qualifying… of course unless you are Sandy V and still killing it on the water.
