Bay was really quite fun this morning for a medium type day. 11:15-12:30… good runners all the way from Governors. Spotted Heather, Eric G, Big D and a few others…

Glad it picked up from earlier morning. I’m going to give it a try after work, but that’ll mean missing the Wed nighter. So much fun to have, so little time…

Checking web-cam just now (3:15pm) - seeing long rollers with very few white-cap action. There are surfskis out and going upwind I'm seeing a lot of bobbing over waves. Some of those look quite steep.
This looks like light to moderate south wind (10 - 15mph) and just after switch from ebb to flood tide. Wind seems to be easing even more. but those waves seem out of proportion - long, wide rollers?
Can we get an after paddle report? Is this “the thing”? Go on the switch from ebb to flood? Maybe part of the problem is that the good stuff does not show up from shore. There are not many whitecaps visible so we are missing the connection unless we are in it. I could be seeing these guys bobbing over waves wrong.

I just saw them paddle by - seemed like they were catching a few. iKitesurf shows wind speed plummeting at Locust Beach West, but still at 22 mph at the B'ham Bay Buoy. I'm just crossing my twitchy paddling fingers that it'll hold out til 6 pm.

Ask Wilson for a more experienced review of conditions, but we left Wildcat Cove at about 12:15 today and had what Wilson described as “fast” water all the way back to Marine Park. I concur. We were past the island before I even looked up. “Not big,” he assured me, but fun, effortless surfing for Wilson. For me, steering problems slowed me down because I was using a tiny rudder. Or that’s my excuse, anyway. Plus everything that Michael M said a few posts back about doing better in a more stable boat, probably.

It's decent here at MP. Wind is S, a bit gusty but steady 12. Capping long waves by Post Point buoy. MG

Thnx guys. It has driven me crazy all these years to see those magic carpet ride waves appear every few weeks and not know why they were there. Marcus and Howat know these waters and have great weather sense. But there's something more going on and I can't help feeling that we are missing a piece. I do know that there is a slot - a narrow band where the waves peak as the tide changes. I remember years ago out with Kirk and Simon. We were halfway across the bay and Simon said, “Look at that!” and off he goes. This little slot was cooking off and it would move around as the current established itself. It disappeared after a short time.
Maybe we need to get Grossman help on this. He's got his nose in the bay as deep as anyone and has the chops to find a mystery beast. I think his gang is working on a topographic of the bay already.

Reivers,
The quest for “magic carpet rides” reminds me of that infamous poem about searching for the perfect high. Me, my standards are lower: I just want to have fun. Usually, if the wind is blowing and I'm on the water, that'll happen one way or the other. Hell, I even had fun surfing in an OC1 a couple weeks ago.

I don't know what tide table you're looking at Reivers, but 3:15 is right in the middle of an ebb tide. Going from the low high at to 1:18 to high low at 6:09 pm.

By the way, here's that poem. Just substitute Gimmesome Roy with Gimmewaves Reivers, and Baba Fats with Big Wave Dave.

Shel Silverstein - Perfect High (Or The Quest For Gimmesome Roy) Lyrics - songmeanings.com
There once was a boy named Gimmesome Roy. He was nothing like me or you. 'Cause laying back and getting high was all he cared to do. As a kid, he sat in the cellar, sniffing airplane glue.
