Everyone seemed very humble after the race. Except Kirk. I thought I had been transported into an alternate universe. Usually, well, maybe I'm exagerating, but he did say he was happy about his race. Everyone else came up with the usual stuff, like a seagull pooped on my paddle and it slowed me down, or my breakfast beer was not a bud lite - it was the oatmeal stout and the wind was in my eyes and I used the wrong rudder wax.
The bay was glass, very light air from the WSW. Good start, not too much swapped gel-coat. The lead pack clumped up on the right side of the start line. Not too fast of a start with the head-wind and some light rollers against us. It got quite lumpy closer to Poe's Point Buoy. Someone in an Epic Ski was in the water up ahead, couldn't have been one of the fast guys. Bussinger and a double rower stopped to assist, probably more boats also.
I had my small rudder and felt the wobblies, but seemed to be catching fast boats. I reeled in Brian and Dave (OC-2) and closed the gap on Warren B. Just before the island it flattened out and my awesome mind powers began to fade. it turned into a slug with me against the world. Brian and Dave got into the glass and following winds on the other side of the island and found another gear. Bussinger, Hedgedus, and kid from Canada and me started pounding on each other swaping leads around until the following seas messed up the drafting. I stayed farthest wide and thought I was king, but noticed Warren and others closer to the wall did better as we got to Poe's Point.
My awesome mind powers kinda turned to crap at about the Dry Dock. …When who should arrive to spectate but Duncan. He offered a rather dry comment about, “need about four boatlengths don't ya?” In the short span of about 40 heartbeats I answered, “I'll get 'em!” and kicked in the awesome mind powers again. Race back on. I did sprints when waves were favorable and got within a boatlength of Bussinger. He heard the pitter-patter of paddle-strokes and I could see veins in his neck standing out. I could not get the edge on him. Gasping at the finish I noticed Hedgedus, Heather and a host of others finishing right on our tail.
For me it was a truely fantastic race. Parking was a booger, but everything else was off the charts high. Great food, excellent race support, super weather, I liked that chop and breeze, I heard that there were a ton of aorta busting duels and tight finishes. It almost killed us all - that means it was the perfect day.
Let's do it again at Whatcom Classic. Right now, I'm gonna crack another beer.

Up in the front (and this is only hearsay because we weren't there) four tandems , Kirk and Don. K were battling it out. I couldn't see the lead from that far back (we were the fifth tandem) but later heard thant Lanboe and a junior were leading the pack. Tracy and the youth finished first overall with Reid Carter and the Canadian youth a close second. Deb and Morris were the third tandem, while Jeff and Katja were fourth. I think the singles were in this order: Kirk, Don, DJ, and Hilburn. later I discovered a single piece of eelgrass stuck to our rudder. This clearly showed that we were severly handicapped and probably would have won had we avoided that single blade of grass.

Hey Reivers,
I think the guy in the water was Gabe N. His rudder yoke slipped, he spent 10 min in the water putting it right. Then he climbed back on and proceeded to finish the race. Way to do Gabe!!!

Thanks Mike. Now that I recall, he was fooling around at the back of the boat a long time. Also, that's why even though LB stopped, he didn't lose much time. Gabe must have waved him off.
Man what a bummer. Gabe was one of our great american hopes for a first.
Today I'm feeling like six big guys gave me a whuppin. But don't tell Bussinger - I don't want to be the first to blink.

Well hell. That wasn't supposed to go out to the whole world.
How about one of the better stories about this race:
Unknown to most of us, Tracy Landboe and a very promising young lad turned out to be a blazing fast double surfski team. Was that Tracy's son? Even more unknown, Ben Fast loaned his son to Reid Carter - also making a blazing fast double's team. You can see the rest of this story on the results page. These two boats were the number one and number two finishers. They were a whole 20 seconds apart at the end of almost an hour and twenty minutes of going like stink. You can bet there was a lot of heart put into that duel.
just. friggin. cool.

How did it go for the OC-6's first race? Looks like they were third overall. Nice job! LG

A great time was had by all.
When we get a crew of experieiced paddlers that have had time to train together, everyone can see how fast these canoes can really be!

Rudder yoke slipped? Let me guess… V10 round rudder shaft, where the pins were not considered 'necessary?' They are.
Preliminary DHC results for the curious.
