Dan Harris Results

John Rybczyk

Hello All,

Thanks for a great turn-out. Here are the results from the long course. The formatting doesn't come out so good here, but the results will be posted in perfect format on the Dan Harris web page soon. I'm still sorting out a few minor issues with the short course…to be posted soon. If you see any errors let me know. Mr. Bednark, I didn't catch your early start time on the paddle board. Did you happen to time yourself? I note that Jeff Hegedus was boat number 47 and he came in 47th place. Jeff, if I knew in advance that you thought it worked that way, I would have given you number 1!

Hello All,

Well, I finally got around to tallying the score for the Think International Challenge. Only surf skis count for this. Like golf, a low score is better. For those of you who care, the rules are as follows:

  1. The twelve fastest boats from each country factor into the first part of the scoring (first place boat gets one point, second place boat gets 2, third gets 3….and so on through 24, however only three of those boats can be doubles. A team can race more than three doubles, but only the three fastest will count in the scoring (assuming those doubles finish in the top 12 for each team, which they most likely will because doubles are fast). If a team has less than three doubles, there is no penalty. For example, if a team only has 2 doubles, then the other 10 boats that factor into the scoring will be singles.
  2. Anybody can be in the doubles, two males, two females, mixed, mixed with juniors, it doesn't matter.
  3. All boats finishing out of the top 24 (12 from each team) will earn their respective teams a one point deduction (which is a good thing because the team with the LEAST points win). Also any surf ski in the short course will earn their team a one point deduction.
  4. Any female or junior racer (17 and under) will earn their team a FIVE point deduction (short or long course). No double counting… a women jr does not earn a 10 point deduction!

Low score wins.

So, after Round 1 (Round 2 being the Tour de Indian Arm up in Deep Cove), the score is USA: 36. Canada: 150. So USA leads for now. A few observations:

  1. The home team always wins their home race by a large margin, merely because they have way more entrants.
  2. This year, Canada didn't have any doubles in the Dan Harris…that hurt. The top three boats were in fact, US doubles. Two of those doubles had a Jr. or woman in them. BAM!
  3. The race scoring system was originally conceived to encourage women and junior racers and, this year, the USA took that to heart with SEVEN juniors and seven women racing. Those deductions really helped. Canada used to kick our ass in this aspect of the race because of the Mr. Fast Jr, but he grew up (and went on to compete internationally)!
  4. The race is well within the reach of Canada to win this year. They helped themselves by having the three fastest men single boats and the fastest woman. My hint to Canada is to make sure you have three fast doubles for the Tour de Indian Arm. And put a junior in them too!

Yours,

johnr

Thanks John,

Note to self: change gender and birth certificate before smuggling Epic GT double into Canada. Glory awaits.

There should also be a deduction of points for women finishing who are over a advanced age….50, 60, or 70, etc. ??? sandy G.
