Dan Harris Challenge Results

Well, we got lucky what with the race bookended between brutal westerlies yesterday and a troublesome westerly that blew up right after the race today. No surf, but it was a beautiful day on the bay for a paddle. We had 89 racers in 55 boats if you count Reivers who pulled up with pulled ribs. Duncan had the fastest start by far. Brandon and Jonas broke the course. Kevin Olney took honors in the men's HPK and Heather Nelson in the women's HPK. A shout out to Abby Scoggins and Hilary Greenwood, our first ever HPK2 double with two juniors at the Dan Harris. You know what that means…we used to buy the doubles so that we could pull the kids around the bay with us, now the doubles are for pulling the old folks around. Preliminary results are posted below. Let me know if there are any errors. Apologies to: Denise Weeks, we missed announcing her third place in the HPKW division; D. Hull (can't read the first name on the entry sheet), we missed announcing her 1st place in the FSK division, and Lance Romo…we missed you entirely…and by that I mean we have no idea when you crossed the line. We guessed. Special thanks to all the volunteers, thanks to everyone for parking where you were supposed to park, thanks to BBOP for brining 24 racers in 4 boats and thanks to the many Canadians who dared cross the MAGA border to race. You are truly pagayeurs sans frontieres. After a nap and possilby a large margarita, I wiill work on the Think International scoring, but the Canadians brought over a lot of fast boast, including many doubles. It's going to be trouble for the USA. Finally, thanks to new sponsor and new papa Nicholas and Faster Farther for providing excellent awards. I won't go into it all here, but if you have not paddled in his gear, you are missing out big time and the best part is that there's more to come. See you on the water. johnr

how did Bob McBeath get such a strange time? What a really great race that was, even though I ended up a spectator. So good to see everyone enjoying the event.

Photos of the 15th Annual Dan Harris Challenge 2019 are at https://imgur.com/a/2L76waQ .

The photos start at the end of the race and end at the beginning of the race. Of course…

I'll have results and the photos on danharrischallenge.com tomorrow, I think.

A good day…

Great race John. Great support group. Good job on missing Bhams notorious west wind chop.
Thanks also to Nicholas and Faster/Farther for the support.

I need to find out what Putnam is doing to paddle so well. I used to be able to keep him in sight. At least i can still see Remmler; if i use binoculars.

LB: A week in Maui doing Maliko runs never hurt anyone!

Good God!! It definitely worked. Nice race. I’m going to miss the Deep Cove race but hope to make a good showing at the Canadian Champs and Gorge races now that i slip into the 70 age group. The barnacles are going to the Gorge June 26 thru weekend for practice.

Great Race on Sunday. Big Thanks to John R and his team for putting on a fun and friendly event. Mark March 11 on your calendar for the Board the Fjord in Deep Cove. The second part of Think International Surfski Challenge. We'll be serving Burritos n Beer!

Most of Team Canada came down on Saturday to enjoy some Bellingham Craft Beer Culture…you know paddling = beer! This was my second B'Ham race of the year. With the Not So Rough Water race being the first. I had a disappointing performance in that one, where I believe I caught a “mental weed” so I was hoping to put in a better performance and represent Canada for the DHC. #1 beat Josh Dyck, #2 beat Josh Dyck! Ha!! Mission accomplished! Seems like an Epic Weedless Rudder and a monster weed guard that would cut the tentacles off a menacing octopus did the job. I was wash riding double OC team of Power/Gerstl and SS double Raymond/Rademacher. Essentially surfing on the wakes. My Epic V12 did a great job. Josh and the my other young upstart rival from Canada Connor Curson, both succumb to the weeds of B-Bay. Thank you Weeds and Chock one up for the old guys!!

Kelowna Paddling Centre was well represented by Sally and Moose Wallick and Greg Redman. Our Vancouver Island contingent was missing as the traditional DHC date conflicts with the Van Island Snow to Surf Race in Comox. BTW the Kelowna Crew is hosting the Kelowna Waterman which will be well attended by Vancouver folk. Its a great weekend of paddling in all disciplines OC Surfski and SUP.

Rod Hope got mugged by an OC6. Hanging out in the wrong part of town. It was like one of those cop chase scenes filmed from a helicopter with the fugitive leaving a path of destruction in their wake. I'm sure there's two sides to every story but from Rod's perspective it was “JPA” “I was Just Padding Along, and this Iako clocked me in the back of my head and then I was stuck between the Ama and the Canoe.” All boats came to a stop and the Jaws of Life were used to extricate Rod from the tangle. At least he has a good story to tell.

A cold NW Breeze kicked up after the race which deterred people from hanging around. Team Canada went to indulge in more Craft Beer.

If you are looking to pick up a new Epic Surfski, Coast Outdoors is representing Epic Kayaks in the Bellingham Area with Steve Scoggins. We have a good selection of Epic Surfskis in Bellingham with some demos. Including the new G3 V10 a great stable surf machine. Give myself or Steve a shout.

Thanks again for a great event and I hope to see you in Deep Cove on May 11.
Cheers
Bob

I'm guessing you meant May 11 rather than March 11?

Yes Thanks Alan and Dale! May 11.
