Hot 5 Race 2017

Hot 5: Downwind Spectacular!!
Kevin Olney

08/24/17 #21840

The wind machine has been turned on for tonight's race! The course will be 100% downwind, starting approximately one mile south of Marine Park and finishing at Zuanich Park in Squalicum Harbor, about 4 miles.

Shuttles will be provided for boats and paddlers back to Marine Park (or you can paddle back if you prefer).

PFDs, leashes and rough water experience are required for this race. If you have a phat boat: paddle it! You will still earn double points for the series and you will have more fun. The safety crew thanks you in advance.

Registration starts at 5:00
Mandatory race meeting at 5:45
Race at 6:00

See y'all tonight!

Great course, Kevin. Thanks for arranging the downwinder and thanks also to our illustrious safety boat drivers. The live music at the finish was a particularly nice touch. I vote to keep that up. Hopefully we can get a mechanic or voodoo doctor to work on wind-o-meter for next time. Or maybe race at midnight, when it was apparently blowing well. While I’m continually humbled paddling with this crowd, it sure is a fun.

Hot 5: Standings after week 4
Kevin Olney

Week 4 is in the books. The wind may not have been spectacular by racing certainly was! 30 paddlers completed the downwind course, battling not only each other but eelgrass, boat wakes and an oncoming sailing regatta. Cryder took the line, followed by Kirk, Tom S., Josh D and Peter M. The return of Dean B from the Alaskan wilderness resulted in a huge shift in the standings as he took first among his rivals. David S, Gwen H, Vaughn B and the entire Clarke clan all made their series debuts.

Next week will be the season finale and there are still a lot of points on the line. Everyone will receive double points, regardless of type of craft. If the conditions are favorable we will set a downwind course again. Otherwise expect to paddle from Marine Park, around Chuckanut Island and back (approximately 6 miles).

After the race, stick around for the race and season awards presentation. We have sweet prizes for the top 10 finishers in overall point standings as well as various other awards and recognitions to be handed out.

Thanks to John R for providing additional safety on the water, Gail H for shuttling and to our awesome sponsors:
