Conditions were calmer than expected at the Jetty Island Race. A strong NW wind was forecasted but ended up being a light SE breeze. There was still some small chop and strong currents to deal with. More rowers than paddlers turned out with familiar names Hirlte and Knakal at the front of the pack, followed closely by newcomer Blake Hansen. (After the race Blake hopped in my ski to “try it out” and, after nailing a couple remounts, paddled around the harbor pretty comfortably. Watch out for this guy!)
Next in were a big group of skis, lead by Dean Jordaan of Seattle.
Great job by Peter Turcan, race director and his crew (Don, Neil, safety boaters and all the helpers)!
