So hard to climb out of the warm bed for the chilly spot under the bridge. But what a great race. As often happens the sun came out on us chilly children after. I heard some great stories. Bummer for you folks that didn't hang for the awards. It was crisply done and great fun roasting the winners. Massive soups and lots of cookies for all. Even though I was unable to talk that cute kid out of her cookie. Only thing that made me feel better was watching Duncan frighten all the little kids.
I had a great start. All three times. I tried to cheat up with the boarders, then tried to sneak in with the rowers. Got busted every time. It was like being the biggest child when LG and Steve got away with it and I got blamed. Like DJ says: no gentleman in surfskiing. I did get away with some skulldugery: great ride from an OC-2 first half. Allowed me to hang with David, Heather, LB. Blew a gasket halfway back. About then aliens must have replaced the nice Heather with a double-tough version. David pulled away like road-runner. So I'm blown up and sure enough here comes LB reeling me in. That unfriendly current seemed like a bad dream. We were both coughing from the lung burn later. One of those great races where you know you used every last cell in your body.
OK, another Duncan story: so he's pacing Deano and like the dang tree monkey does best: he keeps ramping up. It's backwards with Dean, he creaks and groans at the start, then turns up the afterburners through the whole race. It's like a Benjamin Button thing. Weird. Anyway Duncan can't hang (he hates that!) and here comes Medler. can you say “Throw Down”? They are hammering for the finish like anything. As they get to that hell stretch where you go around those pesky boats in the ugly current, Medler stops hearing Duncan's alligator wrestling sounds on his tail. Then magically when he gets around the boats, Duncan is ahead. Ha Ha! you kids didn't think there was a way. But Duncan found a way through all those pilings and docks and ramps. oh, and rocks. Yeah baby. Thats how it is at La Conner. 2014 season is on boys and girls. Lets rock it.

Great race yesterday, big thanks to Sound Rowers & the race organizers for running a smooth race! I had a first w/Don - missed the start, too busy taking warm-up layers off when everyone gunned it. Usually I take pride in gassing it at 5 seconds, afterburners on the three second mark- but Larry & Steve set the new race standard of gunning it at the pre-early first-time-on a stand-up board start. I'll need to try that at the next race.
We caught up with the 'wolfpack' only to find Duncan pulling at the front, chatting away like he was out for a Sunday cruise. Watch out for big-D this year, he's been going hard all winter & like a typical bike racer, will never confess to all the off-season secret sessions. He now also brings a private cameraman for photographic evidence of beating up on younger guys during the finish sprint.
Great to see so many Bham paddlers at the race. Time for everyone to get training, double header in two weeks in sanfran if anyone wants to mix it up, then Rough Water Challenge in March!
See you on the water!

I wish I could say starting with the rowers allowed us an advantage, never really got a good draft out of it….the three minute(?) head start went unnoticed by us initially, as we were thinking “we are awesome”, replaced by “I guess we didn't listen”, replaced by “damn, just passed by DJ&DK”right about the halfway. What a fun cold day.

Only if it comes in that “solid gold” pattern…
