I was #1. It was good. Too bad that only meant that I registered first. Still I had a great race. I finished ahead of most of my arch-rivals and worthy adversaries. Although Tracy L. and Heather totally shattered my fragile male ego. But now for the real race report.
So we all know in this group, the first liar never wins. But I might as well get things started. Crazy water level. Very strong currents before the race running Northerly with lots of junk in the water. But strangely not much wind at all. Separate starts for paddle boards, rowers and then paddlers. Very nice since the rowers just need lots of room. I love the short notice: one blast for start warning, one blast to start. Caught Dean B napping and probably some others. Favored line was left side of start line. Not everyone figured that out because currents were swirly. Really hard start clocking 7mph against fairly stiff current. Boat wakes were steep so there was huge advantage to drafting. Dean hammered to recover from his poor start and went whistling past me. Most of my pack jumped on that and left me sucking. But they made a love train wide around a mass of logs and weeds at the big turn to the West. I saw a gap and leaped through a short line that put me ahead. Heather, Tracy, Dean and Jim S raced by me (again). This was pretty much my spot in the pack.
Current was against most of the way out with logs and junk to dodge in the water. But tide was turning, so it wasn't a sure thing on the way back in. I made a couple of mistakes, but figured it out and found better current. I never really closed the gap ahead. Duncan and several others behind me closed the gap on me, but not enough to get by. Soup and cookies after were amazing. You know its awesome when there are enough cookies after the race. Everyone goes into beast mode on the cookies.
Tidbits: major duel between LG/Shawn and Team 205 (Marc/Rick). Results show 2 sec gap but witnesses say if the race would have been 10 feet longer, different ending. LG/Shawn are publicly humble about drafting their adversaries and sprint-bombing the finish. They promise not to do it again. Until the next race. Major duel between Tracy and Heather. Results show 0.7 sec gap. Chris D. did a header into a log and wiped out a whole conga-line nearby him. Rumor is that Bob P & Son did some kind of Juke-Move to fake him into it. But Chris still hasn't figured out how they did that. Somebody said something bad about Duncan's dog and he kicked on the turbo's finished just 20 sec behind me which I will pay everyone 50 cents to say nothing but nice things about Duncan's dog before any race. Okay, a dollar. Oh, and a shout out to the nice person with those little pills before the race. Especially those ones with the little crosses on top. Whee!!!

Several things: David and I had RD dead to rights down to the log jam, then he (RD) didn't care if he ripped the entire bottom off his Huki ' because it's so old it can be only dated by a radio nuclear isotope process. Anyway when he pulled it off I felt like Pete Carroll at the end of a certain game ,blanched face and all, devastated. Well we tried to get it back and could not. So maybe it's not just the boat.I thought those blue pills he was talking about were outlawed at prestigious sporting events such as these as they cause a lot of blood to move to certain areas of importance ,impotence, not sure of the spelling, to paddling and would improve circulation to the heart, not the head. Yep the start was great and the food is the best , as Dennis M drove all the way down just for the lunch. Thats another view from the superannuated.

Hey All….photo taken from above the slough less then an hour and half after we paddled….if you wondering why a few of us were hugging the middle of the channel and not follow the conga line through the “slow” shallows…this picture says it all. If you look closely you can see the Green buoys and Dolphins that we paddle by…..but don't remember this next year!!!!
March 14th…BBRWRace….Registration is open and BACK THIS YEAR will be the “very cool fashion apparel” T-Shirts PLUS “world famous” Paul C. paddling bobble-heads…The fun never stops!!!
Thanks to Greg and Chistine and all the volunteers for today's race….Awesome job in some very “wet” weather.
Cheers!

That new land mass is freaky.
I didn't do justice in my prior message to the grub. Those soups were outstanding. My foodie wife tells me they were very high quality. Not sure who else noticed the alarming quantities she consumed. And she still poached out of my bowl. Nobody in that kitchen will be getting chopped.
La Conner race is another of Soundrower's jewels in their crown. Hope somebody steps up for that webscorer position. These instant results are fantastic.

You may not believe this, but I had planned a couple of months ago to take my wife with me on the Escapade for this race just to show her one of the beautiful places where we are lucky to race. Having a roof overhead was an afterthought.
After the cloth I had been using to clean rain from the lens finally became soaked I stopped taking photos. Probably a good thing.

Thanks Michael!
My recollection of how this pre-race conversation went down:
Beau: “ You guys aren't planning on drafting us are you?”
Me: “ Yeh, if you do, I may have to post a profanity filled rant on social media/”
Shaun: “ It was Goolsby, it was Goolsby!”

It all started when Shaun walked up and said: “why don't you guys draft us this time?”
Game on.
