La Conner Race rprt

I was a disgusting wake farmer behind Rick/Marc and when these guys bumped it over 9mph I jumped over to the Scoggin's double. I wanted to check result times to try to guess how much time I cut by wash riding. Maybe later.
Fairly aggressive crowded start. Really excellent idea to have separate starts for SUPs, Rowers, then OC/Surfski boats (three waves). That's always a tight start line, so just in the OC/Surfski start there were some who got stuck in traffic. I got lucky, just a little pinched where we crowded past the working boats on the side. Of course my feet were out when the gun went off, but can't blame anyone else for that.
There were some strong horses running, but also some slick moves. Current was pushing out, so we flew out to the turn mark. Rick/Marc diced hard with Team Scoggins. On the way to the turn Team Scoggins had a gap, but Rick/Marc cranked up to close. Almost killed me trying to stay in the rocking chair. I had a great inside line at the turn and caught Rick/Marc. Team Scoggins put a move on everyone and shot ahead. But when Rick/Marc saw the nose of my boat they hammered and pulled ahead. Speeds were in the 5's now against the current. Team Scoggins had a good line and pulled some gap back on Rick/Marc until we got to Goat Island. From that point into Swinomish Channel we were mid-channel and not a good place. What I could not see over my shoulder was Dean and crowd tight to the Island getting a slight lift. My arch-rivals Jim S. and Dean reeled me in (without drafting anyone I have to admit). These two showed up as we got into the Channel. They tried getting past us on the left (mid-channel), but current was harsh out there. So both Jim and Dean tucked right between Team Scoggins and the rocks. That was some rough play. Scoggins never gave way to Dean, so the four boats stayed in a tight knot. I know Jim and I bumped paddles. Thankfully nobody got rock rash. So now it's grunt time to the finish. I imploded for maybe 5 seconds and lost my ride about 100 yards from the finish. None of those other three boat let up in the slightest. They hammered like crazy and looked like Jim S hulked out and made a monster sprint. Dean and Team Scoggins used up whatever oxygen was left in La Conner for their finish so I had to gasp my way across the finish line.
I heard of some other race drama, but hopefully the witnesses can tell it. Congrats to Kirk for another top dog.
Soup was again off the charts. Accommodations for this race are superb with that facility. Fantastic volunteers ran a great event again. Really cool to see all the Soundrowers come out of hibernation for another season. I miss the ones who couldn't make it. For example, Bella Kovacs has been a fixture since I first started. He got special mention as a guest today and made me think of all the great folks who have been doing this for all these years. Some of these folks have put a lot into Soundrowers.org. Hope you guys had as much fun as I did.
