demo day & group paddle at fort baker

The sun was out and it was nice and warm. Dawid and Nikke Mocke were doing a clinic. They are both such nice people and it was a pleasure to meet Nikki and paddle with her. As I was setting and adjusting up my S1R on the ground, I happened to look up and 2 feet in front of my face was the finest looking pair of butt cheeks I have seen in a very long time…it was Hank McGregor setting up his ski next to mine. He is also friendly nice guy.

I met Traci another SA woman and had a good chat with her, she is doing the short course. A group of us went out under the GG bridge at full rip. I was extremely happy to be in the S1 R. Another B'ham guy was there…I think his last name was Howitt. Kim Mackenzie ( Ian's sister ) is also here to do the short course. Nathan from Nanaimo will be here tonight.

We paddled around the corner to the next bay where the waves were rolling into a beach and did lot's of in and outs and shore break starts and finishes….this was really fun and I met an Aussie guy while on the beach who is here on vacation and doing the race. This was the best and most fun group paddle I have done here. Tonight it's off to the Sports Basement for a social, race tommorow and then Zsolt said we should all go to a nightclub sat night…

Kathleen,

That guy is Duncan Howett. He's a legendary rower who has switched to surfski last year because of his back. He's even older than me, Larry B and Mike G. He has been creeping up on us during our Wed Nite paddles. His sprint is tremendous, but he's still on the learning curve and has trouble in the chop 'n slop. I just learned he was going down for the short course last Wed.

If you talk to Duncan again, tell him I said there were a lot of sharks around Alcatraz, but don't worry, he's too tough to chew.

I will give him the message. He was actually doing quite well in the waves today on an S1 R and scooted ahead of me in the rip. He has a friend here with a nice power boat who kept an eye on all of us while we were out. He's going to be good come next summer, seemed like a relaxed type of guy which is good in the slop.
