Deep Cove TNR "Joe's vs. Pros" Race Report

Nicholas Cryder
07/12/17 #21654

Nice night up north and a chance to line up with the best of the best in our sport, and just 60 miles from here with beer and cheer afterwards.

Not the race for delicate boat contact types with the Joe's starting a few minutes in front of the Pros and the course winding around little islands and buoy markers in the shape best described as “phallic in nature with seamen and seawomen everywhere”. I had a decent race, and just whacked myself to try and stay with the big dogs only to be gapped, stopped and later T-boned by course traffic and even a passenger ferry that plowed through the field mid race and then just cut the motor. A remarkable stunt that just added to the lunacy. All the racer's were remarkably chill about the insanity and very polite as we threaded the not so delicate needles. Canada, eh? I chased back up to Ryan Paroz four times and then we duked it out in a sprint finish, which was cool for me but was just gassed and Ryan nipped me. Here is a link to the race footage around the cans:

Also think I should point out that 23 y/o Sally Wallick lined up with the pros and paddled to a top ten finish out of 100 starters including doubles, coming in just behind Wes Hammer. Think about that for a second or ten and then imagine where our own juniors will be in a few years. Awesome!

Rumor is next year's race will be the official unveiling of surfski jousting. Mass start of course.
