Are you Kidding?!!! best race of the year. Now if we could just get those pesky rowers up to the line on time and maybe get other racers to stage up perfectly (hah! good luck with that).
There were some start line victims, but unless you have staged starts with automatic gates it will just be like this. 117 racers - awesome. From my seat: heavy traffic at the start. Rick and I thought we might draft Debbie & Elana for some of their monster start, then work off each other the rest of the race. We got squeezed off by an OC-2 and watched them rip ahead. We had to work our way around and ended up alone. It was a man-on-man battle of singles around us. Peter M muscled is way out of the messy start water and it looked like a wolf pack of Peter, Kim, Warren, Jeff Hill and the K-4. The K-4 was scary and would shoot off at a 45 with no notice. Kim faded (there was some rumors of weeds about) Warren stayed off to our left, Peter and Jeff battled for the hot spot and pulled up to Shane M. This new three-pack of Peter, Jeff & Shane burned most of the oxygen for 100ft around them. We crept closer until the bridge then they exploded. Some heavy combat paddling going on. Jeff tried to rip Shanes' rudder off, but it just cleared the weeds.
Rick and I would have gone much faster, but Greg's clinic totally demoralized me (in a very kind, tactful way). I found out that my stroke sucks! I thought I was the only guy doing it right. At the salmon feed after, everyone at the table started roasting me … (never gets the paddle higher than his navel…) and my wife just loved it. jeeze. My stature as WaterGod is cracking.
Otherwise the day was out-freaking-standing. Did somebody say something mean about Eric W.'s mom? he was on fire. How about that old-barnacle-throwdown between Duncan and LB? And by the way: can you say “chemistry”? just looking at Heather & Brandon makes life bigger - oh and fast. I really liked having all that thousand of rowers around. They are beautiful folks and fast. Mickey and Beth were looking good: they could hardly believe what has happened to that little race they got started.
lets do it agin!!!

Thanks for putting up with us in the K-4 (courtesy of the McEathron's). It was an experience bringing that big battle ship out. Only our second time in the boat - the steering and teamwork will take some getting used to. We're just happy we stayed upright and didn't take out any other boats (though we were close a few times!).

The photos I took are up at the Sound Rowers web site:

With the waterproof casing getting in the way it was difficult to see exactly what I was taking a picture of. I hope I didn't throw too many people off course with my face stuck in the bag.
