punch it up big Stevo. this race is the big end of season howl. throw-down from emerald city regulars south and the gulf island big chop & deep cove crews. Kelowna is like this outrageous wolf pack from the great northern lands. It's like a GOT theme. man I love this race. I'm also registered for GXS (great cross sound) next Sat. But, Samish is one of the few races that have good stuff for support and spectator peop's. If you want your fambly and loved ones to know what the fever is about, bring them. Also, because it's a lake race with huge turnout, this is a decent race for people new to the sport and those with sensible judgement on their pace. For example, there will probably be someone you can pace with no matter your speed.

What a great race put on by Steve and all his help. So Smooth. Thanks Steve. No messing around on the starts. Like it.. Good food, I understand 320 people ate WOW. Need to acknowledge that Tony Brown passed me at the end of the race for 2nd in the 60 and up, so Tony the next time we meet up I'll have your 2nd place medallion, although I expected you to pull me up past Dennis so we could have been 1-2. Ah well. Big Wave

Thanks to all who participated. I'll send out a more detailed wrap up to the racers. I know WP folks, so I know you'll either want to check it before bed or first thing in the a.m. If you have conflicting opinions about these results, let me know and I'll pull up the video. I had a lot of fun today. You people are awesome.

Steve;
That was possibly the best no-nonsense start sequence I've ever experienced at a paddling race. Well done.

I'm sitting in LA, the grandkid trumps the race, but I can't believe the results. Wow, some people had impressive results. Especially in my age group. Putnam, Remmler, Big Wave Dave. The Kelowna group are into something! The teen's! Nice job.

Fun to hear all the results – it sounds like a great race. I was all psyched to paddle, but opted to cheer on my daughter in her XC race instead. Tough choice, but as noted by LB, sometimes family ranks. Thanks, Steve and crew for all your efforts! I hope to be there next year (especially if there are waves) so I can add points to everyone else’s score.

I'd like to point out that Sally Wallick was with the lead group (myself, Don Kiesling and Jamie Klein) for almost the entire race, and not a punch was pulled. Seriously impressive and getting leaps and bounds faster every time we see her race. I may have to give up smoking to keep up. Well, maybe switch to the filtered lights anyway.
Also, Greg Barton brought the new V12M prototype with him (aka the V11), and we'll have it on hand for the next two weeks in Bellingham for demos. This is a 19' version of the V12 that might be ideal for our tight, steep waves here in Bellingham. Simon took it for a spin and had good things to say. My first impressions: very light, very responsive and very good acceleration.

My daughter, Emma, was among the group of teenagers who just got back from Prague representing the USA at the Olympic Hopes Regatta. I would have that sentence, along with this picture, painted on the side of my truck, but Emma is firmly against the idea:
What I can I say? I’m as proud a father as they come right now. But I’m going to pause my praise of my daughter to say how excited Emma and I were that the Salmon Row happened right after we got back from Prague. Know why?
BECAUSE SHE NEVER WOULD’VE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY WITHOUT THIS INCREDIBLE PADDLING COMMUNITY!
Look, I’m new to this whole paddling world, and people told me that Bellingham has a very special paddling culture, and after a week at nationals in Orlando in August and a week at OHR in Prague in September, I can confirm that the rumors are true. I could type a lot more, but two brief stories should suffice to illustrate how fantastic this community is for these developing athletes:
Story #1: I found out that the members of the Oklahoma team get onboard an airplane and fly somewhere else at least six times per year just to get the chance to paddle against somebody outside their team. They fly to Texas, they fly to Seattle, they fly to Canada. And they have to fly because there is nobody near them who can paddle with them. I’m listening to the parents talk about how much time, money and energy they spend in order to give their athletes some experience that I’ve just taken for granted with all the regattas we’ve got around here. We have opportunities here that are the envy of every other club.
Story #2: Emma and her friend Milan took gold in the women’s K-2 5,000M at nationals in Orlando in August, and they were the fastest female boat on the water (chased closely by Elana Wolgamot and Abby Scoggins). They were so fast, Emma and Milan would’ve taken silver in the Senior Men’s category if they competed against them. But part of why these Bellingham girls are so fast in the 5,000M is because they can train on Lake Whatcom every Wednesday night with some incredible athletes. Emma and Milan can crush it at Nationals, but they can’t crack a top 5 finish on Wednesday night in Lake Whatcom. How cool that they get to train in an environment where such high performance is normal.
So it was with grateful hearts that Emma passed out plates to people at lunchtime, and I stirred rice with Joel Bartlett, because we both knew that the opportunities she has in front of her is because, in part, of this incredible community gathered at Salmon Row:
Thanks for letting us be a part,

Just sold my Spark to Emma, so she will be a force shortly in the waves as she is on the flat water. Now we have to watch each outing for her as well as Anna S.

Great post Matt. This spoke to my fatherly instincts. Some of us oldsters had kids come through that had potential. Mickey's son, David's son Peter, Joost's kid (Nick) and my own kid. We tried to pull something together back those years ago. But now something very special has happened. It's still a little rough and for Emma to do this well she has had to carry much of her own destiny. I know for David, Joost, me, LB and some others there is a sense of something wonderful happening.
There are a strong few who are carrying much of this dream in their own hands. I hope new hands come forward as the dream grows.
Just wow. Seeing the kids playfully challenge each other and work with such spirit is awesome. Somehow it has become harder to watch TV sports lately.

Just a kick to have so many racers. Kelowna rocks. I'm going to need some splashy waves to get over that flat water woopin laid on by some of my fellow old barnacles. There were ten of us that broke the one hour barrier. Hilde took a bunch of photo's and I noticed the absence of our Soundrower photo journalist. Who can I send these photos to? I'll post the question on SR yahoogroup.
Bob P was telling me about an online paddle technique program. I can't remember it :( you on here bob?
There was a young lady in a K-1 in same pack as me. Don't know who she was, but fought like a tiger the whole race. She powered by when I got tangled up with an OC-2 and never saw her again. Also never saw DeMow, Tony, Duncan, John George … my pack abandoned me. Me and MG ended up clawing our way through weed-love for a while. What the heck with weeds out in the middle like that? Somebody sprinkle some random greenery out there? Hilde got a great shot of a four seat rower getting totally hammered in the duck weeds. haha, feel the love baby.
One great help for the start sequence was Peter doing crowd control before the start line. His native Public Address system helped stage up quite a few who were a tad bit befuddled. But even so, maybe we have to assign a Valet for DeMow. And did someone specifically tell Tony that there was a swim leg? That almost slowed him down enough for me to stay with him. New rule: anyone over 12 that's faster than me must get off the boat mid-race and check the rudder for weeds. Uh. maybe over 6. There were some awesome kids out there. Wish we could do this race twice a year. Good stuff Steve S. and crew. The jewel in the crown you guys. Just need some kind of a wave machine.

Steve,
I have to pile on with all the others in regards to how fun the race was on Saturday. You know you have a successful race when you have people traveling from distances such as Kelowna and Southern Washington to attend.
For us outrigger ragamuffins, this is an awesome race for our new, late-season joiners to cut their teeth in some good, racing in heavy water, and for us veterans to continue to wonder why this race always seems harder than we remember it being the previous year.
Kudos to Joel and his crew for the excellent spread and I missed who cut the medals but those are very cool and my crews were very stoked to take home a piece of Salmon Row memorabilia.
Thanks again Steve, your hard work definitely pays off and Kai Pana will be back again next year.
