Wife drug me down to stand on bridge and watch paddlers. It was hoot. Inspiring to watch all the racers. I became an idiot fan yelling stupid stuff at racers, slobbering all over myself, getting pumped and just totally into it. I had not expected this. Each racer was a story. Somehow the plain, innocent hopeful spirit of the last of the pack was incredibly moving.

For example racer #28, fiesty young man in big surfski with PFD riding up around his ears. He was trying to do short course, but got caught up in the thundering herd going out under the bridge. Safety boat called me and said to let them know when he was safely back under the bridge and into the upper basin. Sure enough here he comes, hammer down, good form still full of spirit hanging with the big dogs as they sprint for the finish. Heart warming to see.

So. Now for a while I must acknowledge the superior judgement of my lovely bride. Hope to hear some more stories. Like what is going on with Whitlock? He had some monster velocity going on. Peter M had Bob P breathing fire right behind in a four of five boat wolf-pack. And how bad was the wind? it came up southerly pretty brisk. All you rascals were fun to watch.

I want to give a big shout out to our BBOP youth/adult crew, first place in the OC6 division. Three of our kids, Ryan (11)-stroking, Ash (13)-calling the changes and Mimi (15)-steering have practiced hard in the last month and it paid off! As their coach, I am so proud of them and excited for their future. Ryan and Ash were paddling in their first long distance OC6 race, and Mimi was steering her first OC6 race. Steering an OC6 is not easy work, and Mimi has natural talent in feeling how the canoe moves. Ryan and Ash were hammering away; all three of these kids have been absolutely wonderful to coach. Go BBOP Keiki!

Well Steve you pulled that one off first class. Besides working all week , selling your house, buying and moving to a new one, getting the food set up, entry’s done and importantly the timing on the money and results up this afternoon . And what , total numbers approaching 200. It was good to see so many rowers also. It’s such a wonderful event to mix up so many different kinds of boat disciplines. As the saying goes “only a paddler and row knows da feeling” Big wave Dave

I heard you shouting Reivers, and maybe some slobber landed on my head?! Peter M. held me off and Tamlyn Böhm was the big bad wolf of that group. Thanks for cheering! Great race as always Steve!!!

Second, Sammish Salmon Row was so much fun! So dialed in and a major accomplishment on many levels… in particular I found myself impressed that something so classic somehow just keeps getting better every year. That is no small feat, Steve and crew just killed it. I was also super pumped to see so much young gun talent roll this race. From Jonas / Anna duel threat to the young K1 studs and some of the kids smashing it in the canoes. There is something so satisfying about seeing a new generation of paddlers find their place and joy on the water. Very inspiring!
