Deep Cove (Bjord the Fjord) race report

Superb weather, parking pain, giant turnout, excellent course route, fantastic food (burritos and salad) included meat lover, vegetarian plus vegan choices. Lots of bling and award stuff after race. Awards and schwag took a little while to get done. The meal was big, yummy and quick. I was hoping to pig out on Nanaimo Bars, but probably for the best there were none. Really great crowd including all flavor of SUP's and prone boards. Somebody must have sent Kelowna the wrong date and not many from up that way. People brought foldy chairs or flopped out on the grass. Rules: must wear PFD, Leashes required, no drafting between singles and doubles. Otherwise drafting ok.
Race news: staged start so that helped, but it's still a tight start line for all the sit-down long course people. I got squeezed out some at the start, but with this big of a group the rides in back were rather hefty. A couple miles in the conga line I was in broke apart. I had to watch LB working off two strong Think boats as they gapped my threesome. I finally pulled for a while and discovered some lee out of the wind and crawled back up to LB's group. It was all I could do to hang on. Once in a while we would get boat chop from the sides and things would wobble. Big monster sprint finish with LB and a Think paddler going so hard nobody but the scorekeeper knows who beat who. I was just behind those two hammerheads and rode their wash across the line. Up front Brandon and Emma smoked in early. I can't remember if the threesome of Cryder, Redman and another Canadian single were ahead or behind Brandon's double. Heather and Abby powered a double next (maybe 6th boat?) A ton of really fast surfski paddlers today. Including me. I had a hot race and feel pumped about the international challenge. I'll let someone else say who got the trophy this year. I'm heading straight for hot tub and soon as I hit the enter key. rd

Andrew Molem was on a long layover from New Zealand and took out the sprint with Greg Redman for first boat honors, I won the sprint for third against some Canadian Olympian dude, and I’d guesstimate we were about a minute behind Brandon’s atomic powered double. I think Heather / Abbey Scoggins double was maybe a minute behind us, but they were in the mix for most of the race (and yep, so hard to see a tasty double wash right next to you and not partake!!!)
We talk a lot about wash riding, tactics, downwind, etc but it’s rare to see a big group sprint finish in our sport. So rad to watch that group coming in and see Josh take the sprint amongst some very solid company.
Also, how cool to see TEAM USA win the overall contest this year after two stinging defeats!!!! Racing doesn’t mean anything if racers don’t show up, and means a lot when they do! Thanks to everyone who shows up to make our sport so much fun!

After a two straight years of heartbreaking, close losses, the Think International Challenge Trophy (actually a plaque) was reclaimed by the US team on this fine day in Deep Cove. Final score 216 to 229, again very close. The keys to victory were certainly the stellar showings by our juniors and women, both at the Dan Harris and at the Board the Fjord. Emma McCoy finished third overall with Brandon Nelson. Abby Scoggins finished sixth overall with Heather Nelson. So, ok, maybe the Nelsons were also one of the keys to our success this year. Fine races by Nicholas Cyrder, Dean Jordaan, Josh Dyck and Peter Marcus (in that order) also helped push us into the lead. Sharon Scogginseses's 2nd place finish overall in the short course race brought us five points as well. Even Dave Hooper and I managed to factor into the scoring, racing that lumbering beast of a boat, the V8 double, which is actually a very fun boat to race as it doesn't mind being right in the middle of all the chaos. We beat the great Kelownian paddler, Sally Wallick right at the line after she exhausted herself pulling half the Canadian team around for most of the course. Tony Brown, Larry B, and Reivers also factored into the top 24 scoring and Terry Carlson brought us some participation points…and I think that was the entire US contingent of surf skiers. Julie Van Dooren raced an OC to a 1st place finish in her category. Someone get that woman a V8 for this race! Sorry if I missed anybody.
As always the race was well organized, the food was great and there seemed to be prizes or awards for everyone. Great to see everyone.
See you on the water,
Johnr

Not only did I fail to mention him, when I was doing the scoring today, I counted him as a Canadian! Sorry Shawn.

Emma … my wife, Hilde took some snaps. I don't know how to work the media so good. I'll work it tomorrow and maybe can put a photo album up. Hopefully they aren't all close-ups of me with slobber all over my face. …oh wait. I think there's one of you with slobber. Just so cool with this big mix of youngsters, oldsters, guys, gals and everything. All Hail the Nelsons for throwing a big spike in the day with those two doubles. love this stuff. Oh, yeah Bob P. you done a good race. Pats on the head for you and your crew. rd

Does anyone have a link to the results? I can't find a link in the Deep Cove or Board the Fjord sites. I want to know if I beat that last 100 yd sprint! Larry B

Awesome race, Bob Putnam! One of the prettiest courses imaginable outside of Glacier Bay. Well organized, well run, well fed, lots of fun, and lots of schwag. Next time, we just need all the boats in the yacht club parade to fly the colors of the winning team.
