(Hear that? It’s the start of Queen’s “We Will Rock You!” It’s distant and still faint, but it’s real and it’s there as you read on…)
The 2nd half of the Think International Surfski Challenge is coming up next weekend, and reports coming in from our team of north-of-the-border spies paint a very, VERY disturbing picture.
The Canucks, I’m told, are recruiting paddlers from every province and territory. Transcripts from recent, taped conversations read as follows: “If we can’t be the U S of A – Land of the Free, Home of the Brave – with our speed, we’ll just have to so crowd the race course with Canucks that those Free, Brave American racers can’t even paddle!”
(The music… it’s building: “Boom Boom, Chh… Boom Boom, Chh!”)
My only question to my fellow red-blooded, Freedom-loving Americans is:
WILL YOU STAND FOR THIS!? Will you stand for even an ATTEMPT at the same outcome as the Olympic hockey finals?
Can you honestly STAND to see this kind of immoral mayhem again: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iikKzQwgBJc
(The music shakes your chest now. Scream with it, “WE WILL, WE WILLLLLL ROCK YOU!!!”)
Next weekend, Deep Cove, BC.
If you’re American…
If you paddle…
If you’re Free, and Brave, (and have a passport or a Nexus card)
Then be there!
And be ready to THROW DOWN!!!

Reivers: firstly, I can't spell inogurable either. Secondly, re. the plethora of local races, have you seen this list yet? http: sites.google.com/site/pnwpaddleracecalendar/ And finally, the Big Chop may not be well attended by the local surfski racers this week as we're all busy planting eel grass this week in preparation for the Tour de Indian Arm. I am not fooled for one second. This whole 'International Challenge' thing us all about the party after. (I was actually fooled for a few seconds, but my wife has cleared up the confusion.) All the trash talk and scheming - complete with video, gracious sakes. The U.S. is getting shredded on party points - although the burgers were rolling out pretty good at Dan Harris this year. We look good on paper, but who among you wants to remember the stinging sweat in your eyes as you look again and see the stinking island up ahead not one inch closer. Oh, and then there's the schwag-war. How is it that the Canucks hoisted all that booty back across the border? Eel grass? We don't need no eel grass! May the best party win! (oouf - almost said the B word in there a few times.)

One of us has to ask the question. Normally I would be much to reserved and dignified, but when the need is there I'll step forward. So hey, should the top gun paddler of the U.S./Canada International Challenge be awarded one of those really large hanging scrotum things for the trailer hitch on their pick-up truck? Maybe one of the more classy ones, without the hair on it. Since there's a chance this will be Ian, maybe we should sneak out and super-glue it to his trailer hitch when he's at the party. What does everyone think? Too much? Hurt his practice or help him get lucky? (…keep him out of the race?)

Nice idea, yeah, glue the one with the hair to the back of his ski, yeah, slow him down a little!

Hey Bob,
It's going to be a 1 foot tide by the time the racers get to the piling for the down winder. Are we running portage for this section, or are you dropping a pylon in deeper water?
Is there any doubt, really?

Gracious sakes! Nobody did that kind of stuff when I was their age. I'll add this to my list of signs of getting older. Like spending more time commenting about a sport than practicing it and understanding the humor of Rodney Dangerfield. (I won't say in public some the other things on my list.)
