Tour de Indian Arm 2013

Think International Challenge

I'l leave it to others to post race reports, but USA prevailed once again. We lost the day, but won the 2-race series due to a great turn out at both events. A very special thanks to super-moms (on this mother's day) Debbie Arthur and Heather Nelson for organizing and recruiting for team USA. I should have called both of you up to hold the trophy, but you don't know what it's like up there, announcing USA as the winner, year after year. The icy stares from the Canadians are too much, and I just wanted to get out of there before they started throwing left-over prawns at me!

I’m worried that Pete Wells and gang might still be driving around North Van somewhere.

Hey Dean, great race. Thanks for pulling me around what seems like 90% of the course. If you weren't so fast I'd have spent more time at the front and returned the favor. And Heather - incredible performance. Every time I looked over there you were. Great to see you all again but where was Kirk and Cholla, Sean and Kim? See you at the Bowen Race or the Gorge.

No problem Warren – it was a fun race, although I may re-think my tactics for next year. Is Bowen a go this year?

Here's a race summary such as it is…

A classic Deep Cove start complete with “safety” boat intent on running Don K down. Once we got through the rollers and chop of the start, a nice little line formed up. Pete and Eric led our little pack with Morris and Debbie close behind followed by me and E'Lana and. There were other boats around but frankly I was fighting a body in revolt and was unable to really track much more. On the way to the first buoy, Morris and Debbie kindly looked back to see us (me) struggling and, thinking of Team USA, slowed to allow us back on. So, there we were a happy couple of mixed doubles plowing along when all of the sudden we were hailed with the double secret USA code by Brandon. It went something like:
Brandon; “Hey Morris. Slow down, we're right behind you”
Debbie: “Is there anyone with you?”
Brandon: “No”
Morris: “Okay, Let's throttle back and get them on”
So there we were, Three doubles in formation rocking Indian Arm. The five singles ahead as well as Pete and Eric and the Canadian double of Ben and Eric Fast. At this point, I have regained consciousness and realized that I am really not on a bike. I look around and there is Morris, sans sleeves, and Brandon in a tank top and myself who is embarrased to take off my shirt when I shower alone… and our respective powerplants, the aforementioned E'Lana and Debbie as well as Devon (Eye of the Tiger) Bumstead. We all worked it together and managed to pick off a single on the way in to the finish. Brandon and Devon crushed the sprint with Morris and Debbie close behind followed by yours truly with E'Lana to whom I owe much of our success.

All in all it was a beautiful paddle with a nice cooling rainshower mid race and great eats at the end. The Canadians won all the cool stuff and we took home the overall (as it should be).

Then I slept…

Wow……what a drive…….it's Monday, 5:30 PM……we just got home. B C is really a big place! Way to go team USandA!! Once again, we brought home the trophy…..or, on second thought…..don't they keep it up there?

I would like to thank my HPK2 partner Erik on a good paddle. With Gabe and that other fast guy working together, I think we did a pretty good job of reeling them in, and keeping them close……except that last quarter mile…..what the heck happened?

And Gabe, I hope I didn't sound too gruff asking for our inside line around that island……we worked our butts off for a half mile so you wouldn't get the overlap on us. You paddled a great race, Gabe, and it was nice to watch.

Once again, great job to all of those who went up to defend our title! And to our hosts…..what a beautiful race course!! That's about the prettiest race I've done.

Next year, I'm taking a roadmap for the drive up!

Lost GPS at Deep Cove Sunday

That was a great race on Sunday. However, it was about twice as far as I have ever raced before, which combined interestingly with the after-keg. Net result: I seem to have misplaced an orange eTrex 200 GPS (probably on the grass under one of the big tents. HELP,… My very supportive wife is quickly becoming unimpressed with the unanticipated costs associated with replacing lost and broken GPS units every few months.
