In less than two days I’ll be racing the Seventy48 again. As many of you know I had the privilege of partnering with Greg Barton and winning the inaugural race last year. I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to train and compete with one of the legends in our sport and the experience took my paddling to another level.
This year I am attempting the race solo, or as Duncan says, in the “boat of truth”. I have all the nerves and creeping self doubt that you might expect but I have been training with this race in mind all year and expect to be competitive, at least among the solo craft. There are a couple other single skis but my main competition will likely be from a rower from Portland, Ken Deem (Team Wave Forager). He completed the race in 11.5 hours last year, around a 6 mph average. Overall, I expect Greg Spooner and his partner in a double shell (Team Imua) to take the win.
Other notable entrants are Kikaha in an OC-6 and, representing Stone’s Throw Brewery, Marc Fuhrmeister and Bart Maupin in a V-8 double.
If you want to follow the race, the tracker goes live Friday evening before the start at 7:00 PM. My dot will be: Team Maverick

Good Speed, Kevin. Hope you feel the spirit of your supporters out there, about 2:45 AM!
Another boat to cheer for is Team Skelty 2.0, Tim (TJ) Nolan. I knew TJ at Michigan in the 1970’s when I was paddling Sprint with Andy Toro. As an experiment, Andy and TJ designed, and we built, a strip-planked “planning” K 1. It was about 16 feet long, styled after a Hunter, and the after-sections flattened out to a reverse-camber cut-off transom. Ultimately the power from a single paddler was not enough to overcome the wetted surface drag and it was slower than the legal boats. But oh, it looked cool.
TJ has always been into unconventional design ideas. This is his second Seventy48, and he has perfected his super-skinny SUP with ama-like pontoons. The boat is uncanny-fast. TJ is not a highly competitive paddler himself (took 2 days to finish last year) but he loves paddling and is a friend to all.
