Is anybody from our extended house of paddlers doing the Seventy48? It would be fun to know and follow online. Karl Krueger, whom some of you know (the fellow who completed the race to Alaska on an SUP and former WWU/ESCI student), will be racing with his SUP.

The majority of the folks doing the race on outrigger are folks we race against regularly. Jason and Drea Park, Ernie Wong, Patrick Huang and Matt Kearney to name a few. Will be fun to track.

I forgot Mignon Fontenelle as well.
Race starts at 7pm tomorrow night and conditions look like they could potentially have downwind conditions for much of the run from Tacoma to Port Townsend.
If I remember correctly, 2 years ago, the winning craft arrived at the finish line before the race officials. (Was that you in the double Olney?)

In addition to the Sand Point crew a few notable racers to keep an eye on include: Carter Johnson
(Team Downwind Champs), Andrew McEwan (Team Dad), Ken Deem (Team Wave Forager, 2x first single in the race!) and Blake Hansen (Team Pedal People).
Conditions look a bit spicy tomorrow evening through Saturday morning with forecasts predicting 18-20 mph and gusts into the 30s. The winds are from a favorable direction but down winding for 8-10 hours can be totally exhausting. Not to mention the messy conditions that almost always exist north of the Kitsap Peninsula off of Foulweather Bluff. I hope everyone makes prudent decisions and enjoys a safe and exciting race!

And Tenar Hall (Team Gyrfalcon) who has done many of our Sound Rowers races. Go Tenar!

Oh my gosh. And Jana Gross (Team Where's My Hat). So many brave water people!

Thanks Denise for mentioning Tenar (formerly Dot) Hall, formerly of Seattle, now of Orcas. She is doing the race on her new Maas open water 1X. She trained hard all winter, including some night training with the boat bathed in bioluminescence. Go Team Gyrfalcon!
Another team to cheer for is (Bay Area) Team Working Title, John Dye and Amy Byers. John often masterminds the volunteers for Carter’s Gorge events and Amy is a veteran of the California 100 and the Yukon Challenge (same year Carter and Dave Jensen got second).

Working up late…checked in on Carter and the 70/48– WOW..its 12:48 AM and he's hitting over 13 MPH! and 3+ miles ahead of 2nd place (who's only adv. 5.5mph). Carters gotta be surfing. Nothing like surfing at close to 1AM I'm the dark…He's over half way there, 39.5 miles so far.

Carter is nearly to the finish!

He should beat the 2019 2X time easily. He was flying off Bainbridge and beyond.

I’m watching at 4:35. Go Carter! There is a close race for third between DAD (White Salmon: Andrew Mckewen) and Ono Grinds.

Carter, what time did you leave Tacoma? Pretty sure I saw your icon on the LiveTracker still in TAC around 8 or 830, or was that an error? You were flying when it counted! Nice work Carter, Ernie everyone - anyone have some good race stories for us?

On Facebook you can see what Andrew McEwen (Team Dad) had to do with his rudder - I believe he pulled over around 11 pm last night when he was neck and neck with Wave Forager for the lead and stopped for 18 minutes or so - maybe that was when he did his repair? Finished 3rd

For some insomniac-related reason I stayed up and watched the race through Carter’s finish. At the start I thought Carter must have bailed because the note on the tracking site said his icon was “Anchored to the Start Line.” By the time the tracking software got the fleet sorted out, at least on my screen, he was about 10 miles into the race and gunning down the leaders like one of those apocalyptic video games. For Carter, the conditions were just another s—tty day in paradise! The tracker caught him surfing 13’s on at least one of the splits, mostly cruising 7.8 – 8s.
A lot of boats dropped out and lots more pulled over to let the dust settle overnight.
I believe the 2018 race started at 5:00. If I am right about that, Carter beat the 2019 race winning 2X but KO/GB still hold the elapsed record by about 14 min. Correct me if I am wrong.
