Thurs 12/28 run report

Bay Conversations

another wind scenario like we had a couple weeks ago. The Locust Beach gauge showed steady norther. TJ's wind model showed south wind coming in strong about mid-day. This wind model showed a convergence line where south wind meets north wind just to the north of the post point buoy. Then as time passes the convergence would move north until the bay was all south wind. The wind model showed heavy wind in chuckanut bay. This was where the wind seemed biggest in the model. Take a look at how it fills in from Chuckanut Island first. Here's a link to TJ's:

Notice, you have to scroll down a bit to see the landmark outline for orientation to the map. On the right hand side you can check off the hours of the day you're not interested in. It should scroll through the model of wind at each hour automatically. This model is showing wind at ten meters above surface.

So when we put in this morning at ten we could 'kinda' see the convergence line. As Heather pointed out we could see the two different wave sets going against each other. It was sloppy as heck getting off the beach and around Post Point due to rebound and opposing wave sets. Around the point the wind was pretty dang stiff from the south. We tried to find wind shadow along shore as we worked south. We stopped at the tunnel, decided to check in again at the end of the wall. The wall was rocking. South wind was really heavy from the wall to Dot island. We tucked in behind the island, talked it over and wanted to get down to Governor's. The wind was heavy in there and felt like straight out of the East. I was having second thoughts because of the strong easterly. We talked at Governor's and wanted to stay on an inside line coming back due to the Easterly. Nice smooth rides at first, then that easterly worked against the big southerly out of Skagit flats to make sloppy water with sometime ripping good rides. It was fiddly, but a nice break from all the hard scrabble we had done against the wind. Once we got halfway down the wall the waves got real big and fast and the side chop became less of a bother. It kept improving as we came back across post point flats.

From locust wind graph you can see where the south wind finally reached locust beach about 11. We were riding it north right into MP at 11:30.

Caution: TJ's has been horribly wrong sometimes. I'm not pimping their forecast above anyone else's. One thing I've got out of it for sure: there are little “cells” of wind out there in different places. So keep your eyes peeled for what's coming and don't get religion about any particular forecast.

It was fantastic to get a bit of texture out there today. Flat gets boring.
