Quick Trip to Oahu 11/12/2023

Got away for a quick blast of warm water last week…. Did a pre-sunrise run with Jim Foti & Brett Fillmore. They later called it a “double black diamond” day which started with punching through head-high white water in absolute darkness at 5:30 am. It progressed to me finally turning around 3 miles off-shore when I hadn't seen the other guys for about 20 minutes. Fortunately I remembered (sort of) what landmarks to look for on the way back in so I could avoid the reef, sandbar and entrance to the canal. This 2 minute video is a compilation of the two mornings with day 2 being a “blue square” kinda day.

Cool, Beau! Great capture of the beauty and a bit of the stress involved. Looks amazing.

But Beau, it's just warm water!

Those guys saying “double black diamond” or you grabbing your iako gets my attention. When they rate it like that, are they still having a good time or is it nearing the point where stress starts to edge out enjoyment even for experts very familiar with the local waters?

Paul, if Jim and Brett were stressed at all, they hid it very well. I’m pretty sure it was good fun for them.

Jim has won every channel crossing race there is in Hawaii, I’m not sure he even had a leash. And he could swim the 3 miles to shore if needed. Different breed over there.

Damn, that swell looked massive.

it's the dang chunky on top of the swell that shrivels my manly parts. Just makes it so hard to stay relaxed about everything. Focus every second. There needs to be an accelerometer reading along with the speedometer. That would show how badly the boat is getting tossed around.
