Toadily Nookular Deception Pass

Here comes a doozy

Friday night into Sat morning - Deception Pass should be all time.

Yeah - we're talking about taking our cameras down there Saturday morning.

I have been intending to check out alternatives when the Pass is too big (the threshold is lower for some of us than others). Laps on incoming waves at Bowman Bay or Burrows Bay? The west winds at Smith Island are currently predicted to remain quite high at least through Saturday morning.

Deception Pass, Friday 13th Outing

The big wind moved forward some from the original forecast - so we went down to Deception Pass this afternoon. Probably wasn't wise to carry boats with us. When we hit the flats approaching Burlington we could see the big USA flag pegged west to east. And the front of our boats started to move left (trying to line up with the flag?) until there was no denying that they had moved too far. We pulled off I-5, stopped, and found that the V-racks had slid on our roof rack - not sure that it was due to looseness - we're going to have to inspect more carefully tomorrow. It appears there was some compression and gouging of the roof rack bars by the V-rack bars. We straightened the V-bars somewhat, added a strap on each one to try to prevent any further slippage, and continued slowly and nervously on (the Swinomish Channel Bridge was not fun).

West Beach and Bowman Bay were closed, but it wasn't much of a walk to get from the road to Rosario Head. Waves hitting the upwind side of the Head were blowing 50+ ft in the air and it was hard to stand up on that exposed side. We got there just at the start of ebb tide and left long before we could see what the waves in the main channel would do when the Pass was at max ebb. But it was not a day to be swimming at West Beach or Rosario Beach. Lots of logs everywhere in the water.

No way. Might as well paddle through a log boom.

Here's a couple vids taken just before we paddled out, somewhere near Port Angeles.

Hi Paul,

I took this video from Cabana Beach on Friday Nov 13. Cabana Beach is on the east end of Burrows Channel. It was blowing SW about 30 kt. The channel gets a nice current moving west most of the time (can happen on both ebb and flood). So the countercurrent wind/current is impressive. I clocked an outgoing current at 5 kt last summer (flowing west) on my SUP on a calm wind day.

There’s also Tugboat beach launch just east of the skyline marina. Both are easy park and launch options. Both are posted as private Skyline beaches. However, feel free to use them and drop my name if you need to as I live in Skyline. On stormy days the parking and beaches are not used much so don’t really need to worry.

That's a nice wave, Dennis! A little brown and woody, but clean and long.
