Dear Dean…… I hate to inform you that I tied your speed record (12.2) for Bellingham Bay today, however, it wasn't painless. I was not going to paddle today since I am in day #2 of a 2 day colonoscopy prep but the wind suddenly shifted from the south and the water was calling to me. I had enough time to go down to Clarke's Wall and back so I pulled the S1-R out of the quiver, donned the MP3 player, and headed south from Marine Park. Hadn't been on the R since September. Nice size waves compared to Saturday with less wind to push against. Past Post Point there were even a few sets up to 5“ in height.
Coming back I noticed that the R does not catch waves as easily as the X but it handles them much better(being shorter). You really have to crank on it to catch a wave. I was able to link some sets for long rides and somewhere along the way I hit 12.2 on the gps. However, right after I passed Post Point headed north, I made a stroke and came up with only a shaft and no blade. The left blade on my new Fenn 1 snapped off in mid-stroke and disappeared. I wanted to turn around and go find it but that's kinda hard to do in 20+ winds with only one blade. I was able to canoe paddle my way back to Marine Park. The shaft of the missing blade has 2 cracks (4”) running up from the end but this may have happened when the blade was starting to come out. Hitting 12.2 in the R was a lot easier than getting 11.9 in my X on Saturday. The stability at high speed is uncomparable. Just bragging.

Dude!
Do you ever, like, sleep, or eat or do any of that other bothersome stuff the rest of us deal with?
You need an odometer on that GPS, man.

Good going Larry. I was out Tuesday morning just before you went out; according to Mike G. who now keeps close tabs on who is launching from FHBL from his office window. Apparently, Peter M. was out later in the day when it flattened out a bit doing some “distance” training.
Bummer about your paddle. Erik mentioned to me awhile ago that they were having problems with blades breaking, but I thought they had corrected it. I was using my Fenn 1 for the first time in a couple months on Tuesday also.
