Today's Gut Check

Darn , short term memory failed Bob and me again. That is, don't ever do Larrabee to Marine (6mi) in a true west wind at 20 to 25 mph“.Really” big beam seas the whole way. We went out over a mile out of wildcat cove to try to get a angle at least to governor's. No way. Before the tunnel it was getting real nasty, harder than Point Blunt, SF this year. Waves were breaking sideways on me at shoulder high, and pushing the boat sideways down the wave. I managed to handle several of those, until I got ejected. Paddling Hawaii helps here. Leash held, got back on in third try, funny, as I got close to the wall the size of the wave went down, though the chop was every direction. I finally got to the little cove under the tracks in front of Edgemore and was thinking I could go in there and then walk the tracks back carrying the boat, but then I would have to listen to outrigger Bob , (he being a T.S.B.) laugh all the way back to Larrabee. Larry B was just going out as I got to the lawn and I pretended to be eating the grass, but in truth I was kissing the ground. True account of today's 2:00 pm paddle. What a great place. In the am I was in 2 feet of fresh snow. If your bored ,there are some picts up of our new lodge on Mt Bakers web site, although I'm kinda holding off showing the whole thing until we open.

Glad all ended well! We did loops during the same time from Marine Park and headed straight out to the buoy. Healthy gusts came through and conditions were definitely picking up throughout the paddle. Eric G and Kristen rocked the gusty conditions. We were looking for you guys and figured it would have been a challenging downwinder, looked like a couple sailboats were having some trouble out there as well & saw the coast guard out and about..

Talking about snow and paddling - Simon has a BIG birthday this month and mentioned something like celebrating by a snow ski at Baker in the AM, surf on the bay in the PM - not a bad way to to celebrate…..any takers?? Sunday Nov 27th? someone toss another date out?? Anyone ever seen old LG out on skis?- I've only heard stories. Where else can you powder ski in the AM and surf saltwater in the PM?

hooboy! been there. One fine Saturday many years ago I wanted a long run so jumped on my un-trusty Speedster and went from Marine Pk around the Northside of Portage, down around Eliza, then headed back to Marine Pk. Only problem was the N.Westerlies came up and I crawled those last 7 or 8 miles in that bastid of a boat with tears in my eyes. I swear the only thing keeping me in the seat was sphincter suction. No leash, no radio, lots of religion (Oh dear God, I'll be good from now on, ….).

Once I got near those rocks at Post Point I crawled out of the boat a laid there for a while. I finally got back in and paddled the rest of the way to the park thinking my arms were too weak to carry the boat. I serously thought about leaving the sumbich right there on the rocks.

I have a few more embarrassing stories that will not come out unless it's another gorge-like camping debacle. Like mom said, “It's all fun and games until someone gets their eye poked out”.

Geez Duncan, my sympathies to you. Westerly winds can truly make a BIG unruly mess on that Larrabee downwind course, especially off Clarks Wall! Don't any of you all forget it either. Bet you won't do that again will ya Duncan?

Actually if I'd had a camera handy last night, I'd have gotten an interesting shot of Duncan kissing the ground. He looked like a cat you'd just pulled out of the bathtub. Bob M. of course was grinning from ear to ear.
