If you didn't get enough with 70/48, there's this:

Here's a progress tracker:

I see they have to go around the Bellingham outfall buoy on their way up to the Point Roberts checkpoint. Should be cool to cheer some of these folks on when they are going through the bay.

This is pretty exciting stuff! Two guys in a Stellar tandem kayak haven’t stopped for 15+ hours and are way out ahead. Blake Hansen’s pedal contraption is second. Four of the next six positions are human powered. Wind looks light in the south sound for the next day or so, making it tough for the sail crowd.
There is also one gal rowing down the Hood Canal…

Wave Forager seems to be the first one already on his way back north? It’s fun to click on a boat and then select “Add Path” from the tools on the left. You can see some interesting navigation patterns.

Theoretically the tracking offers a lot of cool information. But there is some confusing stuff going on with some boats showing a lot of mileage at some points then jumping back to a much lower total mileages later on…

Something happened with the 2 person kayak that Kevin mentioned where they somehow lost 50 or 60 miles. And the Lost Boys just lost 40 miles some way?

The first two contestants are past us and up into Skagit Bay. I'm guessing they'll head through Deception Pass. The next couple are around Cama Beach and Camano Island State Park. I'm planning on heading out from Madrona Beach to cheer them on as they paddle/pedal by. If they don't make it through Deception Pass by 9:53, their best bet would be Swinomish Channel which doesn't flow as fast as the Pass, and also appears to be a somewhat shorter route to Bellingham.

Jun 9 #29384

Update: It now appears that Bend Racing is heading for the Swinomish, with Boogie Barge in close pursuit. Big Brodema is approaching Onamac Point and Trickster looked like they pulled in to Camano Island State Park for a quick break but are back moving again.

Here are the third, fourth and fifth place boats coming throughrespectively. Big Brodema, Trickster and Sail Like a Girl.

Jun 9 #29389

Oops, I loaded them respectively and they came out reversed. Does that make them irrespectively? Top left: Sail like a Girl. Right: Trickster. Bottom: Big Brodema.

So according to current tracking, Bend Racing should be coming by Marine Park in an hour and a half to two hours or so… with Boogie Barge maybe about 2 hrs later…

They'll hit the outfall buoy and start heading for Lummi Island right in the middle of a pretty big flood (high tide at 1900hrs) So my question is: What's Hale Pass gonna be like, current wise, during the flood? Better to go all the way around Lummi (and ad miles) or go for the Pass?

Jun 9 #29396

Well Beau, here is what Deep Zoom predicts. for Hale's Passage It's pushing north all afternoon and increasing. As I stated in the other post, though, I haven't had all that much success here on Camano with their predictions. Maybe John R can check his atlas and corroborate this prediction….or not!

Just watched “Bend Racing” go past post point buoy on webcam:

They're about done with a water fill up at MP now

They said they’ve had 30 minutes of sleep since the race started on Monday. Next way point in Point Roberts and roughly 100 miles before the finish line.

Boogie Barge is stopping in Bellingham for 2 days (so they can go to work) and then resuming the race on Saturday. What a bizarre event (-:

The passage is total cool on a flood. Current will take them north! Boost of a few miles an hr. I’d imagine. Not cool on ebb.

Unfortunately Bend Racing have been stopped on Portage Island for over an hour and have been rapidly overtaken by a sailing trimaran.

If they sit on Portage too much longer, that ebb is going to be brutal.

During flood current will be honkin to the north! Good fun.

In lieu of wed niter Wermus and I paddled out of MP in glass looking like Peter’s video and within a half hour westerly whipped up for wacky beam slop seas, lots of swirling rebound off the armouring! Must be exciting for the long distance venturers!

Looks like it’s going to be a close finish, with little to no wind!

Boogie Barge, which at the start was in second place before they beached at Squalicum harbor to work for a few days is nearing Point Roberts. Yesterday, I met the two SUP paddlers at Camano Island State Park, where I figured they’d land for a rest. I spoke to them, they were shooting for 50 miles Friday (made 55), and said Possession sound was brutal, downwind but lots of cross chop. The are both from Florida, but one is originally from Oregon. It looks like they will be in Bellingham this afternoon.
