Barnacles

(name for older surfskiers and canoers originating from Bellingham, WA, USA)

  • Barnacle = 60 yr or older paddler (aka Ancient Murrelet, see also Sea Dogs)
    • Some other paddling communities have similar designations such as the 60+ yr old “Fossilson Oahu
  • Grand Barnacle = 70 yr or older paddler
  • ??? = 80 yr or older paddler
  • Don't ask a Barnacle what a Barnacle is because they don't remember squat! “We may not have lost all our marbles yet, but there's a hole in the bag somewhere” - anonymous

Drano @ 80 Trophy (design and build - Paul Clement)

Drano @ 80 Challenge

If you do a downwind run from Drano to the Hatch (Drano Lake to Spring Creek Hatchery State Park - if you know Columbia River Gorge downwinders you will know where this is) on or after your 80th birthday you can get a nameplate added to the Drano @ 80 Trophy. The traditional takeout for Drano runs is at the White Salmon river, but that takeout is really only suited for mountain goats - thus the slightly shorter, more age appropriate takeout at the Hatch.

Challenge created in 2024 by Bellhamsters, Dan Mayhew (class of 2037) and Duncan Howat (class of 2024). (The Barnacle Pledge below is not required - it is just there to generate some enthusiasm toward achieving this goal.).

Barnacle Pledge

(Barnacle definition is at top of this page)

Pledge Guidelines

  1. Delivered as call and response.
  2. Any paddler may administer the pledge.
  3. Whoever administered the pledge is also taking or reaffirming their commitment to the pledge.

Pledge

As a Barnacle
Or pre-Barnacle
I pledge
To defeat the ravages of time
And to aid my fellow paddlers
In doing the same

However
I will still crush them
on the race course

I pledge
To paddle the Drano run
On or after my eightieth birthday

I bow my head
To pay my respects
To all the paddlers
Who came before me
And those who will follow

As my skin sags
I remain a child

Yabba Dabba Doo!
