Peter…This was a great race. Perfect course. I liked the fact that we had to deal with both up and down wind conditions. Each time we went around a corner, the lead would change. Not too pleased with the results of the cookie competition. Reivers must have paid everyone off because I though his cookies tasted like Herring (Deb A. actually should have received some kind of honor). Looking over the results, here is what I found; in the short course, a Huki won in the men's division while in the women's division, the two top boats were Fenns. In the long course, an Epic won in men's single while the rest of the top 5 boats (maybe 6) were Fenns. Also, the top three paddlers to cross the finish line do most of their training on the Kayakpro Speedstroke Gym (big hint here for the rest of you non-erg paddlers). All in all, this was a well orchestrated race.

Interesting results. I expected more spread, especially with that great downwind segment. Total surprise - I put my pretend rudder (4-inch) and found it wasn't enough. Fun to watch the wolf-packs dicing with each other. The top finishers were tight.
The next long course pack marked the return of 'Davey Jones' (Scherrer). I wanted so much to be in that dog-fight with Scherrer/Bussinger (look for MG and Duncan in this cage also). But a seal ate my homework, er rudder. The wind was in my eyes. It wasn't my day on the water.
But I am the EMPEROR OF COOKIE-DOM! Sort of. I will graciously wear the crown and thanks to all of you who I paid to vote for me. Notice that we kept Debbie A's cookies off of the balloting. Her double-chocolate would have smoked my rangers. What a fun twist to have so many great cookies. Except I noticed the crowd was getting terribly rowdy as their blood-sugar content went past the legal limit.
My recipie:
basic quaker oatmeal recipe except
-soak some polenta in milk for 1/2 hr
-use pine nuts, raw sunflower seeds, raw peanuts
-add a glob or two of peanut butter because you need more glue with all these nuts
-ease up a little on the oats and use only half the sugar called for.
-slam in chocolate chips until just before it fails to hold together after baking.
Oh and don't forget to prepare the cook: pound down a couple of mixed drinks. The deal with these cookies is that nobody tastes anything but the chocolate or feels anything but the crunchy cornmeal and oats. All that trick stuff with raisins soaked in merlot, or candied oranges from portugal. forgetaboutit. (The drinks were so that I could ignore Hilde grumbling about me breaking all the rules of chemistry and saying the cookies were ruined.)

Breaking News: Scherrers out of surfski retirerment!

I knew it, I knew it, I knew it. If Scherrer (aka.the Little Devil)shows up after an eight year Hiatus from the surfski, then you know that he has secretly been out training four days a week for at least 6 months just so he can kick ass (read “my ass”). And kick ass he did; although I did put up a fight. My old nemisis and I traded lead at least a couple times during the race, but he kept taking it back on the up wind runs. I was on his tail and made one last attempt to out sprint him at the finish, but alas it was not to be.
For as many races as I've done, this one also held a first for me. I had never ridden Piggy-back on a surfski before!! Paul Clement was two boat lengths ahead of me on our first down wind run when he turned 90 deg in front of me. No way to avoid him. My bow went up on a wave and his stern went down. When we came together, about 2 feet of my bow landed on his rudder post. Increadably we both managed to stay upright.
But….. when I think of it, that probably cost me two boat lengths. FOUL. Its all Pauls fault!

I know the exact moment that David came out of retirement. It was when he heard that there was a Golden Seniors Master class at the US Surfski Champs. Larry, I suggest you start training harder…..

I suggest we all reinforce our boats - David had a certain reputation you know.

Someone else from the B'ham area out of retirement and doing well in OC's is Peter Wells. Peter and partners have been matching the best open doubles outrigger canoe teams. Who says you can't take time off , come back and do really well!
