Early return of the Ancient Murrelet to Bellingham Bay

Although typically a winter migrant, today marked the very early return of the Ancient Murrelet to these waters. Perhaps it’s global warming, or maybe Hilde just got sick and tired of him moping around the house and handed him his paddle and pointed to the bay, but as sure as I’m writing this, I witnessed Reivers' glorious return to Bellingham Bay after too long an absence1) . I was coming in as he was going out, and I thought about joining him for his inaugural paddle, but sometimes a man has to do some things alone and I thought that this was one of those things. I hung around in the parking lot long enough to see him surf past marine park, smiled, and headed to work.

That is a wonderful tribute to a wonderful waterman, John. Thank you. And… YAY, REIVERS!!!

Doc told me this morning at 9:00 that I could paddle without likely harm. So I put in about noon. Felt strange. I kept wanting to peddle my feet and look for mud and rocks. I probably won't make any Wed Niters this season. Beau was out there on a tiny SUP on the chop with some rideable stuff mixed in. I think he noticed how slow I got when a boat wake went by.

Everything feels good, just wimpy. I lasted about 20 minutes. Just enough to get a taste. The doc is more understated than anyone - took me a while to catch on. The break was a miracle and the thin scapula just takes a long time to reconstruct itself. It somehow got itself back in the right position after being shattered and I managed to not screw it up before it knitted back together.

I missed the normal migration season, so I'll be seen ghosting around out there paddling slow. Sure feels good to get a salt water fix.
