VHF Corrosion Issues

There is also a Lowrance version w/ DSC. Some local paddlers have Lowrance, but there's been reports of cracking display. I've had my Standard Horizon for several hard years with great satisfaction. I bought car charger and extra battery. Typical failure is battery charge terminal corrosion - that's what took down my Icom radio. If this fails on my Standard Horizon, I can just swap out the battery and good to go again. (Because the terminals are part of the battery pack, not the radio case.)

If you notice, Morris doesn't do chit-chat. His endorcements have ballast.

buy yourself some dielectric grease from the autoparts store and put it on the battery terminals. Prevents the galvanic corrosion from happening.

I noticed some rust inside the speaker screen on my Standard Horizon HX851, so now I keep it in a waterproof bag designed for handheld radios. You can operate the radio inside the bag, and you could always pull it out of the bag if need be. Exposing it to salt on a regular basis seems beyond the purview of the design… give it a good rinse after every paddle if you don't get a bag.

The bag is the way to go, just don't get lazy and never take it out; my bag took on a pin hole leak, collected water, and thoroughly rusted the leads on the removable battery pack.
